As a result of the spread of an unknown fever, 37 people have died and
more than 125 others have been infected over the past three weeks in the areas
of Jebel Ahmar, Hillat Beida, Abta, Nertete and the area of Tololo in Central
Darfur, Radio Dabanga has learned on Sunday October 28.
A resident from Zalingei, Saad Ahmed Aseel, told Radio Dabanga that the
fever has claimed dozens of lives in the area around Zalingei, in particular
among nomads.
Aseel added that 17 citizens from Jebel Ahmar area have died recently as
a result of the unknown fever, as well as nine in Tololo locality and one in
Abta. In addition, the resident added that in the area of Nertete two people
passed away and 17 others are in critical condition.
The resident pointed out that people infected with the fever suffer from
bleeding in the mouth and nose. He explained that local authorities did not
take the necessary action to contain the disease and, until now, did not
acknowledge the fever is evolving to an epidemic.
He added to Radio Dabanga that residents discussed the issue with UNAMID
and that the mission promised to intervene by investigating the unknown disease
and assist the people in affected areas.
In addition, he called upon health organizations and health authorities
to intervene and prevent the situation from escalating further.
